India is undergoing a structural transformation of food logistics and supply chains from rural to urban areas, that is inspired by recent reforms and hastened by the COVID19 pandemic. Within the food system, the food logistics and supply chain is most crucial to translate any production gains at field level, into economic gains for hundreds of millions of those employed as farmers, wholesalers, truckers, processors, and retailers participating in these supply chains. In erstwhile state of affairs, an inverse link between production and income had manifested – higher the production, lower the net income to producers. Logistics linkages with appropriate supply chain systems can break this anomaly, by expanding the transaction radius of farmers. The prime requisite is to build capacities to directly connect the farm-produce with its terminal destination, instead of undergoing wasteful multilayered transactions and handling.
With this background, ICC strongly feels that focus is due on the agri-supply and midstream activities — these will condition and influence the path of agriculture and food security in the coming decades. A well developed roadmap needs to be implemented for transforming various initiatives into well directed development efforts. India's food logistics and supply chain sector can promote entrepreneurship, ensure optimal value capture of value produced, lead towards doubling farmers' income, and carry national brands globally.
With this background, ICC is organizing an India Food Logistics & Supply Chain Forum focusing on Farm to Consumer on 5th August 2021 from 3.00 pm onwards.
