Event Details

India and Nepal share a unique relationship of friendship and cooperation characterized by open borders and deep-rooted people-to-people contacts of kinship and culture. There has been a long tradition of free movement of people across the borders. Nepal has an area of 147,181 sq. Km. and a population of 29 million. India shares a border of over 1850 km to the south with five Indian States – Sikkim, West Bengal, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The India-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1950 is the bedrock of the special relations that exist between India and Nepal. India and Nepal share multiple multilateral forums such as BBIN, BIMSTEC and SAARC.

India is the largest trading partner of Nepal. Nepal is also India's 11th largest export destination. In 2022-23, India exported goods worth USD 8 billion to Nepal while its imports were at USD 840 million. Indian companies are among the largest investors in Nepal, accounting for more than 30% of the total approved foreign direct investments.

India has emerged as an affordable destination for world-class healthcare. With the medical tourism industry gaining fast-paced popularity, a large number of patients from Nepal are finalizing India as their treatment destination. The main attractive facet that is drawing the attention of these patients is the availability of reasonably priced treatments and that too with zero waiting periods. This is majorly helping these patients in saving a lot of money compared to what they have to shell out in their own country. Majority of the treatments in India cost about as low as one tenth of what they cost in Nepal or other countries.

In Nepal, private investment in hospital sector has seen a significant increase in recent years. Even big corporate houses are keen to invest in these sectors. Norvic, Vayodha and Grande International are some visible examples to show that the private sector has seen potential in healthcare business.

In this perspective Indian Chamber of Commerce is organizing ICC Healthcare Business Delegation to Nepal & India - Nepal Healthcare Forum from 6th to 8th January, 2024 at Kathmandu, Nepal.
