India is the second largest steel producer in the world, following China. The industry is a major pillar of the economy, contributing significantly to GDP and employment. With the steel sector being one of the largest emitters of carbondioxide (7-9% of India's total carbon dioxide emissions come from steel), green steel offers a transformative opportunity for sustainable industrial growth. Therefore, to produce steel using low carbon methods, often replacing fossil fuels with hydrogen, renewable energy or utilizing carbon capture technologies is now desirable.

Further, non-ferrous metals in India encompass a wide range of materials that do not contain iron or significant amounts of iron. These metals are vital for various industries due to their unique properties like corrosion resistance and conductivity. India's import value of non-ferrous metals surpassed 1.5 trillion Indian rupees in financial year 2023.

Apart from steel, non-ferrous metals are also essential for the green transition (EVs, renewables, smart grids), though their carbon footprints remains a concern-especially from primary production. Embracing recycling, renewable energy, and clean mining technologies is vital to ensure these metals support a low carbon future.

Against this backdrop, Indian Chamber of Commerce is organising the 14th India Minerals & Metals Forum on 3rd July 2025 at Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi.
