Animal husbandry, Aquaculture and livestock sectors are critical for the rural livelihood and economic development of the country. India possesses one of the largest livestock wealth in the world and a quarter of the agricultural gross domestic product is contributed by the livestock sector. Pork, fish, eggs, meat and milk form part of the staple food of the people of North-East India as such poultry farming and pig rearing also provide gainful employment. However, these are largely confined to backyard rearing and commercialization is yet to make a dent in the region.

There is a growing demand for pork, fish, eggs, meat and milk due to increasing per capita income, urbanization and changes in lifestyle and food habits. Much of this demand is met from imports from other states in India and from Myanmar. North East India has much higher Livestock, Fishery and Poultry consumption than the rest of the country. Of these 8 Northeast Indian states, Nagaland has the highest per capita consumption. The tribal population in particular appears to consume more pork on average than other groups. Traders in both Assam and Nagaland reported that the demand for pork was increasing along with prices.

In addition to this, there is a lack of advanced technology, inadequate cold storage facilities and processing equipment, particularly at the farm level, act as a major constraint in enabling this sector to take a quantum jump in production and productivity. Considering all these factors ICC, the nodal chamber for the Northeastern states strongly felt that a big and strong platform is required for all stakeholders to share knowledge, technology and provide market linkages.

The main objective of the summit is strengthening forward-backward linkages, modernization of processing technology, cold chain logistics, capacity building, research & development, fostering innovation and market development in the dairy and livestock and poultry and dairy sector,

Following are the focused sector of the summit::

  • Livestock – National livestock policy, breed improvement, farm practices & livelihood
  • Aquaculture and Fisheries - Aquaculture Operations, Aquaculture Development, Production Methods, etc
  • Poultry – hatchery practices, processing, yield, competitive feed / fodder etc
  • Meat Processing – modern abattoirs, high tech slaughtering, optimizing output
  • Dairying – milk production optimization, dairy processing, infrastructure & marketing

Keeping in view the above Indian Chamber of Commerce in association with the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India organizing the Northeast India Livestock, Aquaculture and Poultry International Summit on virtual mode focusing on the International scenario of livestock, aquaculture and poultry with respect to North East Region of India on 17th February 2022 from 01.30 PM.
