In West Bengal, since generations, fishermen have been directly involved in capture fisheries but with the initiative of the State Government, the fishers have started fish farming and thus being helped to ameliorate their socio-economic status. The State's vision of creating an enabling environment for integrated development of the full potential of fisheries of the state, along with substantially improvement in the income status of fish farmers keeping in view the sustainability, bio-security and environmental concerns.
The need of the hour is private sector's participation as well as a strong combination of the Government support and Private participation can tap the various opportunities presented by the sector. The new policy for West Bengal's Inland Fisheries is being proposed to create an enabling ecosystem which will trigger private sector participation in this sector including those of the self-help groups and Fish Production Groups (FPG). Private sector participation can come in various areas of capacity expansion for enhancing production by utilization of available resources. The "Unveiling West Bengal's New Fishery Policy" will serve as a crucial platform for fostering collaboration and shaping the future of sustainable fisheries in the region. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, this session will contribute to the effective implementation of the new policy and the overall development of West Bengal's fishery sector.
