15th India Coal Summit
22nd September 2023, Le Meridien, New Delhi
Coal, iron ore and steel are critical for continuous economic development and forms the backbone for the development of a nation.
The steel sector relies on the availability of resources like iron ore, coking/metallurgical coal, steel scrap and power. India has adequate iron ore reserves, and utilization of iron ore fines and low-grade iron ore is a key determinant for the success of the industry. However, India does not have sufficient reserves of coking/metallurgical coal and is dependent on imported coking coal which are subject to wide price fluctuation.
Coking coal reserves in India stands at 34.5 billion tons but the quality is not adequate enough because of high impurities. With a targeted production of 300 million tons of steel by 2030, the demand for coking coal is expected to rise to 161 million tons. To keep the industry globally competitive, India has to maximize the use of its domestic reserves.
Coking coal is a major fuel for the steel sector and reforms are required to track investment in the industry, especially in the coal abundant areas. Significant use of technology and focus on coal washeries, lowering ash content and further bringing end to end solution to enhance domestic coking coal production should be the priority. The government is open to all ideas including opening of closed washeries, leasing out washeries set up by CIL, managing coking coal mines, and integrating technology applications.
Against this backdrop, Indian Chamber of Commerce is organizing 15th India Coal Summit on 22nd September, 2023 at Le Meridien, New Delhi.
