India is the 2nd largest producer of steel and has a large requirement for iron ore which is likely to increase manifold as capacity building progresses. Today, India requires nearly 175 million tonnes iron ore for producing steel which will increase to over 437 million tonnes by 2030 as per the National Steel Policy's vision of 300 million tonnes of steel capacity.
In order to cope up with the increasing demand of good quality iron ore for future projected growth of steel industry and in order to conserve limited reserves of high-grade iron ore lumps in the country, the beneficiation of low-grade iron ore, BHQ /BHJ is of utmost importance. Setting up of beneficiation plants at various mining areas would help in utilizing low grade iron ore fines for steel and pellet industries.
The Union Government has formulated policies aimed at bolstering the domestic steel sector and some of these policies are National Steel Policy; Steel scrap policy; Domestically Manufactured Iron and Steel Products (DMI&SP) policy in government procurement. These policies are in place only to provide an impetus to the Indian steel sector to reach new heights and meet global standards.
The government has also rolled out Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for specialty steel to ensure raw material security for steel sector particularly focused on iron ore and coal. The PLI scheme also aims to provide support to MSMEs for exports promotion, thus enhancing the scope of Quality Control orders on steel and setting up of an Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS) and Project Development Cells (PDCs) in Ministries/ Departments for attracting investments and to streamline investment inflows.
Against this backdrop, Indian Chamber of Commerce in association with the Ministry of Minesand Ministry of Steel, Government of India is organising the 12th India Minerals & Metals Forum on 30th June 2023 at Hotel Le Meridien, New Delhi.
